A bit about Aaron…
St. Andrews, a medieval Scottish city built on headlands overlooking the North Sea, makes a dramatic profile when seen from sweep of beach to the south. It was the subject of Aaron Schuerr’s first landscape, a simple charcoal drawing done during his studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, Scotland. That day changed everything. Without even knowing what a “plein air painter” was, Schuerr had become one. During his final year abroad, Schuerr explored the Scottish countryside almost daily, first working in charcoal, and then, as his confidence increased, with pastel.
In 1995 Schuerr received his fine art degree and returned to the U.S. He married a Montana girl and followed her out west. For the first year he had no studio, so he was forced to brave the often savage of Montana weather in order to paint. It was the best training an artist can have.
Aaron now lives in Livingston, Montana with his wife and three sons. Though he now has a large studio to work out of, he still advocates painting directly from nature as much as possible. He teaches plein air workshops, and is writing three articles for The Pastel Journal in 2012. When not painting in the field, he can be found on stage, most recently playing Friar Lawrence in production of Romeo and Juliet.
