Plein Air Painting in Paradise Valley
Dates: June 25-29, 2012
Cost: $550
Class Limit: 15
I’ll take you to some of the most stunning locations in Paradise Valley: mountains, a spring creek, the mighty Yellowstone River, and old ranch buildings. It’s all here in this artist’s paradise! Back in the studio we’ll discuss design, color, intent, studio paintings, and many other topics. I’ll introduce painting exercises geared to help you see the landscape in terms of shape value and form, and I’ll finish the class with a friendly critique of the weeks work. You’ll get plenty of individual attention, and if that’s not enough, how about dinner at Pine Creek Cafe followed by a sunset painting demo? Still want more? I’ll cook everyone a gourmet dinner one of the evenings. Convinced yet?
The Art Of Plein Air Painting in Yellowstone
Dates: August 31-September 3, 2012
Cost: $400
Class Limit: 13
We’ll stay in cabins at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch, in the heart of Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley. Imagine hearing wolves howl at sunset, or watching bison graze along the Lamar River! Painting in Yellowstone is unforgettable! You’ll spend mornings and evenings sketching and painting outdoors, known as plein air painting, when the shadows are long and the color is rich. During these field sessions and in the classroom, you’ll discuss fundamentals of value, design, and color, and planning larger studio paintings from plein air studies. Instruction focuses on oil, but will include pastel, which shares many concepts and techniques.
Fall Plein Air Pastel
Dates: September 24-28, 2012
Cost: $550
Class Limit: 15
Finally an extended workshop exclusively for pastel! September in Montana is breathtaking: the fields turn golden and the leaves begin to turn. I’ll take you to some stunning locations in my corner of the world. I’ll help you understand layering color, edges, atmospheric perspective, and many other important concepts. We’ll also look at different papers, pastel brands, and I’ll share my thoughts on framing. I’ll also introduce you to charcoal drawing, which is a fine complement to pastel painting. If that’s not enough, I’ll also cook a gourmet dinner on one of the evenings.
What is plein air painting?
En plein air is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is particularly used to describe the act of painting in the outside environment rather than indoors.
